Cedar places third in Conference one-act meet

NORFOLK – Students from Cedar Catholic High School are being recognized for their Greek comedy.

Cedar Catholic placed third in the 2023 edition of the Mid-State Conference one-act contest for its students’ performance of “The Idiot and the Oddity” on Nov. 14 at the Johnny Carson Theatre in Norfolk.

“We had some really great competition who had some clean and strong plays,” Cedar Catholic one-act coach Audrey Freeman said. “Our students did wonderful, especially adapting to a different stage, timing and equipment.”

Cedar Catholic’s play production is about a goddess in training attempting to reach her deity status after being challenged by her father, Zeus, to illuminate one mortal, Protagonis, to flaws in human society.

The goddess in training takes the mortal on an adventure through Greece as he learns that humans are messy beings and the gods of Olympus are not much better.

Cedar Catholic had several students recognized as Outstanding Performers at the event: Ben Kleinschmit, Henry Becker, Anneliese Kleinschmit, Anna Steffen, Langston Christensen and Madison Kuchta.

The students hosted Snacks and a Show on Nov. 21 before putting on a school performance at 11:15 a.m. Nov. 22 at the Holy Trinity Elementary gym. Cedar Catholic will compete next in the District C1-3 Play Production contest on Nov. 28 in Ponca.

“We are currently taking the judges’ critiques and some new ideas to add to keep the show fresh and interesting,” Freeman said. “We have a few more practices before districts, including our performances, so this gives us time to adjust to new cues and lines. Getting feedback is a great way to have our actors and crew perfect the play.”
