CROFTON — The Cedar Catholic boys’ basketball team marched to a 65-46 victory over Crofton last Tuesday.
Cedar was led by senior Matthew Becker scoring 23 points, shooting 10-16 from the floor. The senior was followed by a freshman putting up the first double-digit scoring effort of his varsity career.
Charlie Schroeder scored 13 points in the victory. His previous high was eight points, which he had in his varsity debut against Boone Central/Newman Grove in the opening game of the season.
As a team, Cedar shot the ball remarkably well despite struggling with the long-range shot. The Trojans went 1-14 from three-point territory, but went 26- 51 on two-pointers to counter-balance the effort and shoot 42 percent from the floor.
Part of Cedar’s formula for success came down low.
The Trojans grabbed 42 rebounds on the night, including 18 on offense, al- lowing for second-chance opportunities throughout the night.
Leading the effort on the glass was sophomore Myles Thoene, grabbing nine.
On offense Thoene is generally known for his shooting ability from beyond the arc, and he did make the team’s only trey, however, he also put in a strong effort down low with a team-high four of- fensive rebounds along with tying Becker with ve defensive boards to lead the team.
Cedar’s win puts the team at 3-0 on the year.
Cedar travels to Fremont Thursday for the Knights Holiday Classic.
The Trojans will start the tournament against Class B opponent South Sioux City. The two teams have not faced each other since they were both members of the Northern Nebraska Athletic Confer- ence in the mid 1990s.
