Cedar, HNS win SubDistrict games; local teams to face each other for title

PONCA — Both Cedar Catholic and Hartington-Newcastle won their SubDistrict opening round games Monday, setting up a Tuesday night SubDistrict title game battle here between the two teams.

The Lady Wildcats took care of Creighton in three straight sets, while Cedar Catholic swept Niobrara-Verdigre.

HNS had three girls in double figures against Creighton. Kayden Jueden led the Lady Wildcats at the net with 18 kills. Abbe Morten hit for 12, while Erin Folkers added 10. Brianna Hopping set up the Purple Pride offense, dishing out 22 set assists.

Cedar earned the win thanks to some solid net play from Abby Hochstein, who pounded home eight kills on the night.

Aiden Wortmann, set up the offense with 17 set assists.

Cedar’s serving also kept NV off balance, as the Lady Trojans zipped 12 ace serves over the net.

The Lady Trojans were led at the service line by Brynn Wortmann who served up five aces.

The defense was truly a team effort as Tori Arens paced the team with five digs, while Aiden Wortmann had four.
