Cedar, HNS advance to SubDistrict title match

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — It was not the ideal situation for local volleyball fans, as Cedar Catholic and Hartington-Newcastle had to face off Tuesday in the SubDistrict final for the right to play in this Saturday’s District title game.

Cedar opened SubDistrict play Monday by sweeping Bloomfield. HNS had a tougher road to the title game as the Lady Cats needed four sets to upset secondseeded Boyd County.

Kayden Jueden and Erin Folkers paced the Lady Cats at the net with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Olivia Grutsch powered the defense by scouring the court for 34 digs.

Strong hitting from Brynn Wortmann, and stout defensive play by Laney Kathol helped lift the Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans to a sweep of Blomfield.

Cedar took a 6-2 early lead against Bloomfield in their first set, but the Queen Bees used solid serving and hitting to come back and knot the game. The two teams traded points from there until the Cedar duo took over to lead the team to the 25-21 win.

The second set started out with the two teams again trading points. Cedar then built a 9-5 lead with Meredith McGregor at the service line. The Queen Bees called a timeout to try and cool her hot hand, a move that worked as McGregor’s next serve sailed long.

That’s about the only thing that worked for the Bees, though, as they were only able to garner two more points in the set.

Cedar used a combination of good serving and solid blocking from Kathol to outscore the bees 16-2 enroute to the 25-7 win.

Cedar took charge from the start in the third set. Coach Denae Buss was able to get her bench some experience, as well.
