Cedar golfers claim invitational title

Posted in:

HARTINGTON - Cedar Catholic won the Hartington Girls Golf invite on Monday morning, with senior Ireland Biltoft leading the way.

Biltoft found herself tied atop the leaderboard with a 92 through 18 holes, and the senior went back out to hole one to face Anna Kassmeier of Norfolk Catholic and Kylee McLean of Battle Creek in a sudden death playoff.

“It went pretty well,” said Biltoft. “I had a good drive and second shot, but my chip went a little long. I think that is what killed me, but I still ended up with a bogey on that hole. It was nerve-wracking, really nerve-wracking. I had never had a playoff hole before so it was interesting.”

Biltoft and McLean would both bogey, while Kassmeier would par the hole for the win.

The Cedar Catholic team would win first place by five strokes though over Battle Creek, with four Cedar girls medaling in the top 15.

Hallie Noecker, Rebekah Kleinschmit, and Maizie Christensen each found their way into the top 15. Noecker finished eighth with a 108, Kleinschmit in 10th with a 109, and Christensen in 14th with a 115. Lauren Heine’s score of a 122 and 19th place finish would be dropped from the team score.

Delayne Sudbeck represented Crofton-Hartington-Newcastle well, shooting a 106 and finishing in seventh place.

It was a hot one on Monday in Hartington, and as competition intensified on the back nine, so did the heat. Biltoft used the heat to shoot through the leaderboard. Shooting a 40 on the back nine, the senior rebounded from a 52 to start the day.

“I just knew that shooting a 52 on my home course was not acceptable in my mind. I just told myself hole by hole let’s get a par on this hole and this hole, and let’s make up for it.”

The Cedar team travels to Wayne on Thursday and will start preparing for Districts on October 1.
