Cedar golf team qualifies for State

Posted in:

NORFOLK - Cedar Catholic girls golf is heading to State for the third straight year.

The Lady Trojans are heading to River’s Edge Golf Course in North Platte for the two day, 36-hole tournament on October 8-9.

Cedar earned their way at the District tournament at Norfolk Country Club on Monday. Big Red tied with Norfolk Catholic for second place but lost the tiebreaker. The result of the tiebreaker did not matter for anything but pride though, as the top three teams from each District qualify for State.

The tiebreaker for a team tie is that each team’s four golfers play the same hole and the lower total score wins the tiebreaker. This is sudden death format and could take as many holes as needed, but on Monday it only took one hole for Norfolk Catholic to best Cedar Catholic.

After the team tiebreaker, the individual tiebreaker for first place took place. It was a showdown of Cedar Catholic senior Ireland Biltoft, Norfolk Catholic junior Anna Kassmeier, and Pierce junior Sydney Erickson. All three shot an 89 to tie for the top spot.

Kassmeier won the tiebreaker with a par.

Cedar Catholic’s 440 team score was led by Biltoft’s 89, but strong play by three other Trojan golfers earned the team a trip to State. Rebekah Kleinschmit followed Biltoft with a 12th place finish with her 114. Kleinschmit was followed by Hallie Noecker shooting a 118 for 19th and Lauren Heine finishing 21st with a 119. Cedar Catholic’s fifth golfer was Maize Christensen. Her score of a 120 was dropped from the team score but was good enough for a 24th place finish.

Other area teams at the District C3 Tournament included Battle Creek finishing in first with a 426. Norfolk Catholic and Cedar Catholic followed with a 440, West Holt earned fourth with a 464, Wayne next with a 475, O’Neill with a 523, Elkhorn Valley with a 543, TC with a 558, Ainsworth with a 578, and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge with a 648. Plainview and Crofton-Hartington-Newcastle competed but did not have enough players for a team score.

No LCC players qualified for State. Glenda Vance led the bears with a 29th place finish, shooting a 126. She was followed by Jayden Kinkaid in 37th with a 138, Hope Swanson in 49th with a 162, and Brianna Campbell in 55th with a 222.

Delayne Sudbeck of Crofton-HNS finished her season with a 15th place finish, shooting a 115.

Cedar Catholic will send five golfers down to North Platte to compete in the Class C State Tournament starting on Monday, October 8.
