Cedar girls turn in impressive performance at Wakefield

Posted in:

WAKEFIELD — Cedar Catholic finished the always-tough Wakefield Tournament with the runner-up trophy Saturday.

The Cedar Catholic volleyball team got off to a good start in last week’s two-day tourney.

Cedar defeated BRLD after three tough sets, 25-15, 17-25, 25-23. The Lady Trojans also took on Pierce, battling toe-to-toe in the first set, before winning 26-24, and then cruising to the 25-16 second set win.

Cedar defeated host Wakefield-Allen and avenged a loss to Lutheran High NE on Saturday.

The Lady Trojans suffered their lone defeat of the weekend in the title game, falling to Ponca.

In Saturday’s title tilt, Cedar got off to a good start, handing Ponca a 25-15 first-set setback. The Lady Indians took control after that earning a 25-18 and  a 25-20 win for the championship hardware.

Abby Hochstein did a great job of keeping Ponca off balance in the title game, firing six ace serves over the net.

Cedar’s serving game was working well, as the Lady Trojans had nine ace serves as a team.  Tori Arens, Aiden Wortmann and Brynn Wortmann all had one ace apiece. Megan Heimes was not able to record an ace from the service line, but she did manage to connect on 100 percent of her serve attempts to lead the team in that category.

Hochstein was a real force at the net, as well, as she slammed home a team-high 15 kills. Kenlee Goeden also had a good day at the net, smacking down 11 kills.

Aiden Wortmann did a good job of setting up the offense, dishing out 28 assists.

A trio of Cedar athletes did their best to keep the ball off the floor, leading the defense in digs. Megan Heimes had a team-high 17, while Abby Hochstein scrambled for 11 and Brynn Wortmann snagged 10.
