Cedar girls top Wayne, LCC, but fall to S.D. team

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. —

The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans mini win streak came to a close here Friday.

The Cedar girls got off to a slow start and never recovered.

Dakota Valley raced out to a 19-8 first-quarter lead. The Lady Trojans bounced back in the second frame, but were still out-scored 14-13. The host team out-scored Cedar 35-33 in the final 16 minutes to claim the win.

The Cedar offense was paced by Brynn Wortmann, who pumped in 21 points. Laney Kathol also hit for double figures with 11, while Aiden Wortmann chipped in with 10.

The dangerous combination of Rachel and Rylee Rosenquist led the home team with 25 points each.

Cedar took fifth-place honors in the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout.

In the fifth-place game, Cedar handed the LCC Lady Bears a 59-40 setback.

The Lady Trojans built a 12-point halftime advantage and then cruised in the second half for the 19-point win and the fifth-place plaque.

Brynn Wortmann hit eight 3-pointers and scored a tournament-high 30 points for the Lady Trojans.

Makenna Noecker added 14 points and Aiden Wortmann had 13.

Kinsey Hall paced the Lady Bears with 14 points.

The Lady Trojans took control almost from the opening tip, building a 17-9 first-quarter advantage.

The Lady Bears rebounded in the second frame to put up 14, but Cedar dropped in 18 of its own to take a 35-23 lead into the break.

The Hartington team outscored LCC, 24-17, over the final 16 minutes to seal the win.

Cedar opened the tourney with a 62-40 loss to undefeated Hastings St. Cecilia.

The Lady Trojans bounced back in their second round game to earn a 65-49 win over Wayne. Cedar took charge early racing out to a 13-8 lead. Wayne cut its deficit with a 15-13 second-period run, but the second half belonged to Cedar.
