ALBION — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans got the new season off to a slow start last week. Cedar opened the 2019-20 campaign at Crofton, falling to their MidStates Conference rivals.

The Lady Trojans then fell 51-39 Friday in a conference match-up with Boone Central.

Cedar took control early at Albion, building a 13-10 firstquarter lead, thanks to a pair of Abby Hochstein buckets, a long distance shot and regular basket from Brynn Wortmann, as well as an inside jumper by Aiden Wortmann. Hochstein and Brynn Wortmann also hit free throws in the frame.

Defense dominated in the second frame as the Lady Cards outscored Cedar 8-6 to cut their halftime deficit to one point — 19-18.

The Lady Trojans got five points from Brynn Wortmann and three from Hochstein in the third frame, but Boone Central took over in the third quarter, outscoring Cedar 24-5. Cedar bounced back to outscore the home team 15-9 in the final frame, but the damage had already been done.

CROFTON — The alwaystough Crofton Lady Warriors showed Thursday they will once again be a force to be reckoned with.

The Lady Warriors put together a 56-40 opening-season win over Cedar Catholic.

The two teams started out evenly with Crofton taking an 11-10 first-quarter advantage.

Coach Aaron Losing turned up the defensive pressure after that, forcing several Cedar turnovers, while building a 15-9 scoring advantage, as the Lady Warriors took a 26-19 halftime lead into the locker room.

The Warriors’ full court press shut Cedar down in the third frame, while allowing the Lady Warriors to score some easy transition baskets and out score Cedar, 21-7, and take a 47-26 lead into the final frame.

Cedar outscored Crofton 14-9 in the final frame as the Lady Warriors got their reserves some experience.

Brynn Wortmann had the hot hand for Cedar, hitting 6-13 from the floor, and ending the night with a team-high 20 points.
