Cedar girls start Shootout with a split of games

WAYNE — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans split a pair of games to open the Great Northeast Neb. Shootout last week.

A letdown in the second quarter allowed the undefeated Hastings St. Cecilia girls to take control of Friday’s firstround game against Cedar.

St. Cecilia held a 12-9 first quarter advantage before outscoring the Trojans 23-10 in the second to go up 35-19 at the break.

Both teams scored 10 points in the third quarter, but the Bluehawks topped Cedar 17-11 in the final frame to earn the 62-40 decision and improve to 7-0 on the year.

Brynn Wortmann paced Cedar with 12 points followed by Aiden Wortmann’s eight-point effort.

Bailey Kissinger was the top St. Cecilia scorer with 20 points as Tori Thomas added 18 points.

Cedar got off to a great 13-8 start in their consolation-round contest against Wayne.

The Lady Trojans took a 25-23 lead into the halftime break.

Cedar again came out strong to start the second half, outscoring Wayne 18-12. The Lady Trojans then sealed the win in the final frame with a 22-14 run.

Cedar was led on the day by Brynn Wortmann’s 26-point effort.

Two other Cedar athletes also hit for double figures in the contest. Makenna Noecker dropped in a career-high 18 points, while Aiden Wortmann hit for 12.

Wayne was led by Brooklyn Kruse, who connected for 18 points.

Cedar took on Laurel-Concord-Coleridge in the fifth-place game Monday.
