Cedar girls post 1-2 mark at Scotus tourney

HARTINGTON — The Cedar Catholic volleyball team entered the gauntlet last week — competing against some of the best teams in the state.

The Lady Trojans are now 3-3 following a week that saw the girls drop three of four matches.

Cedar lost at home against the Class C2’s top-rated team Lutheran High NE in three sets (25-13, 25-23, 25-22) on Sept. 1.

Cedar then headed to the Shamrock Invite in Columbus and fell 2-0 to Columbus Lakeview (25-17, 25-21) and Columbus Scotus (25-21, 25-18) while recording a two-set (25-6, 25-7) win over Twin River.

Against Lutheran High NE, Laney Kathol had 10 kills while Brooklyn Kuehn added seven kills and Megan Heimes had 19 digs.

In the Lakeview defeat, Kuehn had eight kills, Brynn Wortmann totaled three solo blocks and Olivia Hamilton had 11 assists. Wortmann had seven kills against Scotus

Wortmann had seven kills against Scotus while Kathol tallied four total blocks. Wortmann and Makenna Noecker had 11 digs apiece.

In the victory, Kuehn had five kills, No ecker served up six aces for the Lady Trojans that ended up with 15.

“We were very aggressive from the serving line and we are starting to excel at running our plays off serve receive,” CCHS head coach Denae Buss said. “We played some tough competition this week and did like the way we competed. We just need to finish out each set.”

The Lady Trojans played Crofton Tuesday and then head to Wakefield for a Thursday-Saturday tournament.

“This week we should see some more good competition,” Buss said. “The Wakefield Tournament is filled with teams that are very tough such as LHNE, LCC, Ponca and Pierce. We will have to be prepared for each game.”
