Cedar girls earn sweep at Wynot triangular

WYNOT — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojan volleyball team is gathering for a hopeful run into the conference, sub-district and district tournaments as the season winds down, strengthening their skills in a very competitive triangular Oct. 5 held in Wynot with the Lady Blue Devils and the Ponca Indians.

Cedar Catholic came away with two big wins on the night with a sweep of the Lady Indians in the first and a 2-1 win over Wynot in the final match of the evening.

Against the Lady Blue Devils, Wynot took the first set 25-17 before the Lady Trojans forced a third set with a 26-24 win in set two then took the final race to 25 by a 25-20 score.

Melayna McGregor was the main offensive weapon for Cedar Catholic slamming down a dozen kills in the match. Lexi Eickhoff added seven.

Addison Walter and Katy Jones each had an ace serve and Lyndsey Hamilton tipped-up 17 set-assists, McGregor just missed a doubledouble with eight assists.

Jones successfully navigated 24 passes to set up the offense. McKinlee Lammers tacked on 10 and Annika Kuehn had eight.

Defensively, Jones added 14 digs to her effort in the match, McGregor again narrowly missed a double-double with nine.

Eickhoff patrolled the net like a prison guard, not letting anything through as she collected six blocks.

In the first match with Ponca, the Lady Trojans were extended to the limit but came away with a 25-23, 25-23 sweep of the Lady Indians to take the match.

McGregor led a very balanced attack with six winners as five Cedar Catholic slammers had three or more kills and seven had at least one.

Lauren Bernecker had five, Eickhoff and Walter had four each and Grace Wortmann had three.

The Lady Trojans scored some points at the service line with eight aces.

Bernecker paced the effort with three, Walter added a couple.

Hamilton had 12 assists, McGregor eight and Jones had 23 good passes.

Eickhoff, Bernecker and McGregor each had two blocks, Jones had seven digs.

The two wins left Cedar Catholic at 14-11 on the season as Laurel-Concord-Coleridge was set to come to town on Oct. 10.

The Lady Trojans look to complete the regular season on the road with a date at Albion to take on the Boone Central Lady Cardinals on Oct. 12.

The Mid-State Conference Tournament is set for Oct. 16 through Oct. 19.
