Cedar earns SubDistrict title against Wisner-Pilger

Posted in:

WAYNE — The Cedar Catholic boys basketball team continued its dominating run through the Class C2-5 Sub-District tournament Thursday night against the Wisner-Pilger Gators in Wayne.

The top-seeded Trojans, paced by 6’4 sophomore Charlie Schroeder’s 15-point performance, outlasted the second rated Gators in thrilling fashion in Thursday night’s SubDistrict championship match in front of a packed to the brim gymnasium.

The Gators drew first blood off of a Dylan Kneifl jump shot.

That early lead would soon disintegrate for the Gators as Cedar Catholic’s Myles Thoene would connect on a 3-point shot, followed by a Carter Arens’ jumper, giving the Trojans an early 5-4 lead, a lead that although being heavily contested would not be relinquished again throughout the duration of the contest.

The Trojans’ defense would be on point early, as they would play a pivotal role in cruising out to a 12-2 run against the Gators to start off the first quarter. Wisner-Pilger senior Colby Heller would slow the Trojans’ momentum with a pull-up jumper bringing the first quarter to a close with a score of 14-6 Cedar Catholic.

Second quarter action got started the same as the first, as Regan Bellar was the first to find the nylon from beyond the arc for the Gators.

Bellar’s shot was immediately answered by the Trojans, as Myles Thoene would hit his second 3-pointer of the game, cementing Cedar’s strangle hold on the lead. After several down and backs, and with 3:06 left until the half-way break, Wisner-Pilger’s Cole Jacobsen would successfully knock down his own trey ball, closing the deficit to three points. (Charlie) Schroeder and Jaxson Bernecker would then take turns helping extend Cedar’s lead before the half-time buzzer sounded, as they both knocked down jump shots, going into the locker room clinging to a 27-19 lead.

With the start of the second half, the intensity from both sides would ramp up. The speed and tempo of each ensuing drive down the court would cause several miscues from both sides. The Tro jans controlled much of the glass, as they were feasting off of second chance shots under the board, notably from (Charlie) Schroeder who would pick up his 13th point under the boards extending Cedar’s lead to 12 points early in the third quarter.

Things would get a little hairy for the young Trojans in the fourth quarter, as Wisner-Pilger would go on a 10-2 scoring run in the period. The spark, which was administered by junior Klay Koehlmoos, featured back-to-back 3-pointers, followed by (Coby) Heller jumper narrowing the Trojan’s lead to three points late in the fourth quarter, bringing the Wisner-Pilger and Cedar crowd to the tips of their seats. The Cedar crowd would soon breathe a sigh of relief as Tate Thoene would draw a shooting foul, making both free throws and putting the Trojans back up by five, forcing the Gators to start fouling.

Cedar then rode the foul line through the buzzer, stamping their ticket to the District finals with the 54-49 victory.

Cedar was led in scoring by Charlie Schroeder’s 15 point effort, followed by Tate Thoene and Myles Thoene with 13 and 10 points scored.
