Cedar County’s Civil War veterans

Posted in:

Angie Dowling (above) gives some family history about her Civil War relative, NH Dowling, during a special Civil War ceremony Saturday at the Randolph Cemetery. Dowling and three other Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery were recognized in a special service conducted by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War - Department of Nebraska. About two dozen area residents showed up for the event, which featured history of the Sons of the Union, and information about the four Civil War veterans presented by their descendants. The ceremony was organized by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to honor the last Civil War soldier of Cedar County, Edward Leicy, who died June 5, 1939, at a rural Randolph farm. Leicy’s relatives and the relatives of Civil War veterans Frederick Weber, NH Dowling and John McClain, all long-time residents of Randolph, were on hand to talk about their ancestors. At the conclusion of Saturday’s event, a bronze GAR star flag holder was placed at each grave. Each medallion has a QR code linked to the SU-VCW website that will have a listing of Nebraska’s Last Soldiers.
