FREMONT — Cedar Catholic bounced back from its first loss of the season to claim the title in the Knights Classic here last weekend.

Cedar had to settle for runnerup honors in the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout, but came back strong to win the Fremont post-Holiday tournament title.

Cedar earned a 57-52 win over host Fremont Bergan in the first round of the Classic on Friday.

The Trojans then topped Pierce, 54-50, to win the tourney title.

The win moves Cedar to 7-1 on the year, while Bergan fell to 5-5 with the loss and Pierce fell to 5-3.

Cedar and Pierce battled evenly in the first frame to open Saturday’s title game.

The Trojan defense took charge in the second frame, holding the Jays to just six second-quarter points, while Cedar dropped in 12 of their own — all from long distance.

Charlie Schroeder hit a pair of treys, while Tate and Myles Thoene also hit from downtown to give Cedar the 25-21 lead heading into the locker room.

Pierce erased Cedar’s lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Trojans, 18-13. The offensive surge gave the Bluejays a 39-38 lead heading into the final frame.

Tate Thoene hit a trey and a pair of freethrows to power the Cedar offense in the final frame.

Myles Thoene aided the Trojans by nailing four freethrows in the final minutes. Charlie Schroeder did his part to keep the Bluejay offense off balance by hitting a trey of his own. Jaxson Bernecker rounded out the fourth-quarter scoring with a jumper.

Cedar fared well from the line in the final frame, scoring eight points from the charity stripe to earn the four-point win.
