HARTINGTON - Cedar Catholic opened the boys basketball season on Friday night with a 54-34 win over Boone Central/Newman Grove.
Senior Matthew Becker led the way with 18 points, nine rebounds, one assist and one block. That output included a first half where the senior scored 16 of the team’s 22 points and eight of the first 10.
Becker kicked off the scoring with two layups, then on a two on one breakaway, Myles Thoene throws a bounce pass to Becker, and he takes one step before rising up for a two handed slam dunk. His first of the season.
“There will be plenty of other dunks this year,” Becker said. “I was just trying to get everyone into it in the first few possessions of the game.”
The senior led by example in the first half, but head coach Matt Steffen says the team played much better overall in the latter half of the game.
