Candlelight Christmas lights up the night

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — Bright colors, dazzling lights and smiling faces could be seen all over Hartington Friday night as the community’s 20th annual Candlelight Christmas and Lighted-Vehicle Parade went off without a hitch.

This year’s event featured several

community Open Houses, the annual lighted vehicle parade, Holiday music and, of course, Santa Claus. It also featured dry weather,

which has been a problem the last couple of

years.

This event is hosted annually by the Hartington Chamber of Commerce. This year, several newcomers brought their ideas and efforts to the committee and their hard work paid off.

This year’s parade featured everything from lighted horses to floats and fancy cars. In all, this year’s parade took over 35 minutes to complete as it wound its way downtown from the top of the hill at the schools to the Cedar County News corner.

The evening once again turned out to be a great time to gather with family and friends, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Holiday Season.

It didn’t hurt that the skies stayed clear of moisture and the temps hovered in the 30s making the evening just right for wandering in and out of the several businesses hosting open houses and Christmas shopping specials, before settling in along the streets and sidewalks to watch the parade.

The evening started with businesses around the community opening their doors to holiday festivities. Santa and Mrs. Claus then started greeting children at the Historic Hartington Hotel prior to the start of the parade.

Old St. Nick, Mrs. Claus and the elves were back at work right after the parade as a line of children (and some grown-ups, too) formed in front of his chair for a chance to share their Christmas wish lists.

When the parade began, elves of every size threw candy to the hundreds of children waiting impatiently along the parade route.

Food and beverages were served at various locations throughout the downtown area, with some establishments even running out of food.
