Brewery is coming to Hartington

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council Monday approved two applications that will pave the way for a craft brewery to begin operating here.

The Council gave its nod of approval for both a Class L and a Class C Liquor License application for Big Hair Brewhaus.

Brett and Leigh Wiedenfeld are planning to own and operate the Big Hair Brewhaus Brewery at the old Surge Building on North Broadway Avenue.

They needed both licenses in order to brew their own beer and for on and off sale beer and liquor sales.

Brett Wiedenfeld said once the building has been remodeled it will seat up to 130 people.

Wiedenfeld, who farms part-time and serves as an ag loan officer at the Bank of Hartington, said they plan to bring a professional brewmaster, Reid Trenhaile, in from Brookings, S.D. to set up and then manage the operation.

Trenhaile, who is originally from the Wayn area and has relatives in the Wynot area, worked at Wooden Legs Brewery in Brookings for several years.

Wiedenfeld said he is hoping to have the operation up and running by late May.
