Bow Creek Watershed Project schedules winter meetings

HARTINGTON — The 2024 Bow Creek Winter Workshops will focus on successfully implementing popular conservation farming and ranching practices by overcoming concerns that are often associated with them. Each workshop will feature a regional producer who is making these practices work.

In January, the focus will be on successfully implementing no-till and cover crops. Soil compaction and residue management are common concerns associated with no-till.

Factors contributing to compaction and ways to alleviate compaction without tillage will be discussed. Some of the same strategies that help with compaction can help break down and cycle heavy corn residue. This event has been rescheduled from Jan. 15 to Jan. 26, at 6 p.m., at the Lewis & Clark NRD office in Hartington.

The focus of the Feb. 19 workshop will be cover crops. Selection, establishment, management, and termination of cover crops will be discussed in depth. Producers are encouraged to bring a map of one or more of their fields to use during the discussions.

Participants will leave with tools and strategies to use this growing season! The workshop starts at 6 p.m., at the Lewis & Clark NRD, Hartington.

A two-day rotational grazing workshop will be held March 22-23. This workshop will start with the basics of holistic grazing management, explain the theory and practices of rotational grazing, and give producers an opportunity to create a grazing plan for their operation. Excursions to view rotational grazing systems close to Hartington are planned, depending on the weather.

This course is offered at no cost through the Bow Creek Watershed Project (a value of $350 per person). RSVP is requested for this event to determine the location in Hartington.
