Blue Devils, Humphrey St. Francis are very familiar foes

Posted in:

LINCOLN — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils had a very impressive State Basketball Tournament streak going.

For eight straight years from 2010 to 2017, Wynot had either won or earned State Runner-up honors in the Class D2 State Tourney.

That string ended last year when the Humphrey St. Francis Lady Flyers defeated Wynot in the District title game, forcing the Lady Devils to stay home during last year’s Big Dance.

Those two teams will meet again this year — this time in the first round of the State Tournament.

Wynot opens the 2019 girls state basketball tournament Thursday at 7 p.m. at Lincoln North Star High School.

If the Lady Devils get past their first-round foes, they will face off against either Mullen or BDS. BDS was last year’s State Runner-up.

Wynot faces quite a challenge against the Lady Flyers.

The Humphrey team is led by the biggest scorer in the entire class. Sophomore Allison Weidner has pumped in 514 points this season, averaging 19.4 per game.

The 5-8 standout also leads her team in rebounds with 146 or 5.6 per game. She’s also a force under the net as she’s come away with a team-high 15 blocks this season.

Wynot’s offense is led by junior Katelyn Heine, who burned the nets for 285 points this season.

Another junior, Shaelee Planer, also hit for more than 200 points this season — scoring 201.

The Lady Devils are good at finding the open player under the net as three WPS girls — Planer, Heine and Michaela Lange — dished off more than 50 assists this season.

Karley Heimes, a 5-10 freshman, leads the team on the boards with 135 or 5.4 per game.
