Blue Devils face a challenge in Humphrey St. Francis

Posted in:

WYNOT - The Blue Devils have a tough matchup coming to town in the Humphrey St. Francis Flyers.

HSF did not play last week and will start its season on the road against a familiar opponent. Wynot and HSF have some history in the Class D2 State Playoffs against each other. Two years ago Wynot’s season ended on a loss to the Flyers, 48-36, and last year the Blue Devils lost 22-20 in overtime in Week 3.

“Playing HSF has always been a great test for us,” says head coach Steve Wieseler. “They are one of the best teams in the state this year and this will be a good measuring stick for us this year.”

The Flyers are untested coming into the week, but the team still found ways into the preseason ratings by the Huskerland Prep Report (5), the Omaha World-Herald (4), and the Lincoln Journal Star (4). After Week 1, the Flyers maintained their rankings in each poll despite having not played a game this season. Lawrence-Nelson is the only other D2 team ranked without having played a Week 1 game.

The Flyers return three starters on both sides of the ball. HSF returns an experienced backfield of senior running back Jarrett Weidner and junior quarterback Trevor Pfeifer. Weidner will also be joined in the backfield by juniors Taylor Wemhoff and Evan Foltz. Both Wediner and Pfeifer were all-district selections last year.

The experienced Flyer backfield will be a challenge for the Wynot defense. In Week 1, the Blue Devils allowed 191 yards on 34 carries but kept the Plainview Pirates to only one touchdown on the ground. Wynot will try to match the Humphrey St. Francis firepower in the backfield with a squad of Wielselers having contributed in Week 1. Nate Wieseler led the way with 123 yards and two scores, with quarterback Landon Wieseler running for 77 yards and a score. Peyton Wieseler carried the ball four times for 12 yards and Jake Wieseler ran once for six yards. Sophomore Anthony Haberman was the one person not a Wieseler in the backfield, running for 36 yards on four carries.

Wynot also has a balanced throwing threat in Landon Wieseler. The senior went 11-21 with 137 and two touchdowns.

This Week 2 matchup between Wynot and Humphrey St. Francis will tell a lot about both team’s potential this seasons. Does HSF have another seven-win regular season in them like the Huskerland Prep Report says? Does Wynot’s win over former 11-man school Plainview show they too will be a playoff contender this year? Can the Blue Devils get revenge on last year’s 22-20 overtime loss to the Flyers? The only way for answers is to go to Terry Foxhoven Field on Friday and see for yourselves.
