Bernard A. Verschoor

WYNOT — Bernard A. Verschoor, 84, Wynot, died at his residence May 29, 2018. Visitation and a Vigil service were June 1 at Holy Family (Sacred Heart) Catholic Church, Wynot. Visitation continued Saturday, one hour prior to services at the church. Mass of Christian Burial was June 2 at Holy Family (Sacred Heart) Catholic Church, with the Rev. Eric Olsen officiating. Burial was at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wynot, with military honors by the Wynot American Legion Post #31 and the American Legion Riders. Pallbearers were Gary Clifford, Jerry Mikulicz, Michael Morelli, Chris Rybak, Franco Rybak and Zachary Verschoor. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. Bernie was born Aug. 20, 1933, in Hospers, Iowa, to Peter and Louise (VonderHarr) Verschoor. He attended St. Anthony grade school and Hospers Public School until the family moved to Sioux City in 1950, graduating from Heelan High School in 1951. Bernie worked at McKesson-Robbins Wholesale Drug Company until going into the Army in April 1953. He served in Germany for 18 months during the Korean War. After his term in the service was over in 1955, he returned to McKesson-Robbins until he was hired by the U.S. Postal Service in 1957. He worked at the Post Office for 35 years, retiring in October 1992. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 20 years. He married Judith (Judy) Bishop Nov. 5, 1966, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Sioux City, Iowa. They had three children; Bernie, who was stillborn; Ann Minette and Peter James. Bernie was a member of Nativity Catholic Church, Sioux City, until he and Judy moved to Wynot in December 2008, where he was a member of Holy Family Parish of Cedar County. He was an American Legion member of Post #697, in Sioux City, and Post #31, Wynot. He is survived by his wife Judy, Wynot; daughter, Minette, and her husband, Virgil Paltz, Wynot, and their children Sabrina and Tiana; son, Peter, and his wife, Kimberlie, and their children, Zachary, Wendy and Ryan, LeMars, Iowa; his brother, Anthony, Sioux City, Iowa; his sister, Florence Kwikkel, Sioux City, Iowa, and their families; as well as the family of his deceased sister, Ann Peterson; he is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jim Bishop, and wife, Betsy, Orlando, Fla., and sister-in-law, Barb Walsh, Broomfield, Colo., and their families; and the family of his deceased sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lois and Jim Metz. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ann Peterson; half-brothers, Donald, Mike, Kenneth and Erwin; and half –sister, Fern; his infant son; his brother-in-law, Robert Walsh; and sister/brother-in-law, Lois and Jim Metz; and sister-in-law, Joann Verschoor.
