Posted in:

WAYNE — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears basketball team squared off against three solid Class C1 teams during the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout.

The Bears opened the three-day tourney with a 69-62 win over Arlington. The Orange and Black then suffered a 63-50 semifinal setback against undefeated Auburn. In the third-place game, the Bears dropped a 59-50 decision to the host Blue Devils.

In the opener against Arlington, LCC got off to a good start, building a 15-9 lead over Arlington, then extending that lead to 33-19 at the halftime break.

The Eagles outscored the Bears 43-36 over the final 16 minutes, but it wasn’t enough to wipe out the early deficit.

Noah Schutte paced the Orange and Black offense with 27 points. He also led the team in rebounds, with 15, to claim yet another double-double on the season.

Evan Haisch and Ty Erwin also hit for double figures with 13 each. Erwin also chipped in by dishing out five assists.

In the semifinal game, the Bears were caught sleeping in the early going against Auburn — the top-ranked team in Class C1.

Auburn opened the game on fire, racing out to a 22-11 first-quarter advantage over the Bears.

The two teams played evenly the rest of the contest, but the damage had already been done and LCC fell 63-50.

Noah Schutte had his usual stellar game, hitting for another double-double. He dropped in 27 points to lead the Bears offense and pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.

Ty Erwin was also able to find the range, hitting for 12 points in the contest.

As a team, the Bears connected on 45 percent of their shots from long distance, hitting 5-11. The Orange and Black hit only 39 percent of their traditional field goal shots, 12-31. The Bears were deadly from the line, though, making 11-13 freethrows.
