Area student-athletes named to NJCAA All-Academic team at NECC

NORFOLK — Two Cedar County athletes were among the 45 Northeast Community College student-athletes to be named NJCAA All-Academic it was announced on Friday.

Student-athletes are eligible to earn academic honors by achieving an overall GPA of 3.60 or higher for the 2019-20 academic year.

In addition, the Northeast baseball, women’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s soccer, softball and volleyball teams were each named a 2019-20 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year.

Julia Eskens of Wynot made the All Academic Third Team for the NECC volleyball team. She was one of 10 NECC volleyball players to earn a spot on either the First, Second or Third team.

Here is a look at the All Academic selections for Volleyball

First Team: Jessica Borg (Wakefield)

Second Team: Elley Beaver (Columbus), Morgan Haner (Sterling), Megan Wehrbein (Burchard)

Third Team: Elizabeth Christensen (Stanton), MaKayla Davidson (Alliance), Julia Eskens (Wynot), Hannah Heppner (Stanton), Kirsten Staab (Broken Bow), Jamie Bonifas (Blue Hill),

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge’s Lorna Maxon earned a spot on the NECC women’s basketball All Academic First Team.

She was one of only three Hawekette women’s basketball players to earn a spot on the First Team.

Macey Kulhanek of Howells was a Second Team member for the Northeast basketball team.

Third Team members were Beth Matas of Girona, Spain, and Jacalyn Schwanebeck of Hyannis.

Women’s Soccer

First Team: Mandy Stricker (Broomfield, Colo.), Kahrena Thompson (Jamestown, Colo.), Ariella Crespo (Ramstein, Germany)

Second Team: Madison Foutz (Brighton, Colo.), Mackenzie Byrnes (Brighton, Colo.)

Softball

First Team: Lauryn Cardenas (Gothenburg)

Third Team: Sydney Kelley (Omaha), Kaylea Bailey (Schuyle), Chantel Julian (Roseville, Calif.), Vada Kruse (Norfolk).

Men’s Golf

Third Team: Grant Sell (Gothenburg, Neb.), Matthew Kingston (Springfield, Neb.)

Men’s Basketball First Team: Ben Moxness

First Team: Ben Moxness (Scribner)

In addition, the Northeast baseball, women’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s soccer, softball and volleyball teams were each named a 2019-20 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year.
