Area communities make plans to celebrate Veterans Day

HARTINGTON — Area residents are invited to pay tribute to veterans with annual Veterans Day activities.

Veterans Day will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 11, with local veterans groups planning to put up the flags at the courthouse monument the day before — on Thursday afternoon.

At 1 p.m. Friday, the public is invited to attend as the names of all the fallen will be read aloud in the basement of the city auditorium.

Taps will also be played at this time.

The community is also invited to participate in the annual Veterans Day program at 2:45 p.m. Friday at Msgr. Werner Activity Center.

Dustin Schlote of Norfolk will be the featured speaker at the program, which also features music from both the Cedar Catholic and Hartington-Newcastle bands.

Those students winning the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contests will read their essays.

A roast beef dinner will be served at the VFW Hall Thursday, with a social hour starting at 5:30 p.m., and dinner to follow. The meal is open to all veterans and the public. The meal cost will be posted at the VFW Hall.

Reservations for the meal can be made by calling VFW Post Commander Dean McGregor at 402-2543436 or 402-841-7871.

Flags will be taken down from the courthouse monument either on Saturday or on Monday, depending on the weather, McGregor said.
