CEDAR CATHOLIC Games this Week: Thursday vs. Battle Creek, Saturday at Lutheran Northeast Outlook: The Trojans finished third in the Mid-States Conference Tournament, wrapping up with an overtime win over Battle Creek. Charlie Schroeder, Myles Thoene and Tate Thoene all led the team in scoring once during the marathon week of hoops. Last week’s results: Beat O’Neill 65-45, Lost to Wayne 59-52, Beat Battle Creek 61-56 (OT) Coach Matt Steffen Comments: “Against O’Neill, It took us a while to get going, but we finally put them away late.  Charlie had a real nice game for us making three 3-pointers for us and he really got us going. “Wayne is playing really well right now.  They started the season with four straight losses and are 16-2 since, with one of those two losses coming to us.  They are playing really well right now and won the conference tourney championship 54-41 over Pierce.  “Battle Creek was the No. 1 seed coming into the tourney with a 13-3 record.  It was a great game.  We were up 50-46 with 20 seconds left in regulation and they scored the last four to tie it.  I thought our kids responded well to absorb that blow, and regroup.”

HARTINGTON-NEWCASTLE Games this Week: Friday at Wynot Outlook: The Wildcats are 10-8 after a split of two games last week. Defense was the big deal in a Wynot win and there was more than just that side of the ball needed to beat Ponca. Last week’s results: Beat Wynot 39-36, Lost to Ponca 56-44 Head coach Nick Haselhorst Comments: “Against Wynot, points were hard to come by, We didn’t shoot free throws well and our shooting percentage was low, but we did a good job of defensive rebounding and making timely plays.  “Against Ponca, we didn’t move our feet well enough defensively in the first half, which allowed Ponca some easy points in the paint and allowed them to build a lead. We hung around in the second half and got it to single digits multiple times, but never made a timely defensive stop and rebound to get it any closer.  This will be the third time we play Wynot. The first two games have been close and hard-fought.”

WYNOT Games this Week: Friday vs. Hartington/Newcastle. Outlook: The Lewis and Clark Tournament didn’t go well with two losses and now they will have a shot to at least administer some revenge in their home finale against the same Wildcats that tipped off a rough week. Last week:Lost to Hartington/Newcastle 39-36, Lost to Creighton 70-35. Coach Lee Heimes: “This will be the third time we play them this season.  Every game that we have played them has been close in the last game we had the lead with two minutes left.  We have been playing up and down this season.  We are trying to be more consistent every time we play.
