CEDAR CATHOLIC

Upcoming Games: Friday vs. Norfolk Catholic; Sub-District TBD

Outlook: Tate Thoene lit up and Charlie Schroeder lit up Homer with 28 and 26 points respectively and Thoene led the charge against Battle Creek and Lutheran Northeast. It added up to a 3-0 week for the Trojans who are starting to find their stride with district play beginning on Monday

Last week’s results: Beat Homer 77-55, Beat Battle Creek 68-37, Beat Lutheran Northeast 65-61.

Coach Matt Steffen Comments: “It took us a while to get going against Homer, but we finally put them away late. Charlie and Tate had nice shooting nights for us making three and seven three-pointers respectively.

“Against Battle Creek, our defense was focused, engaged and very intense for the whole game. Every player on the bench was ready when called on to enter the game. We had 11 different kids score in the game and we really put the clamps on a pretty good team.

“Norfolk Catholic is a very good 500 team. They are talented enough to beat anyone on any given night. They are very athletic and have some kids that can shoot the ball well.”

HARTINGTON-NEWCASTLE

Upcoming Games: Friday at Randolph; Tuesday vs. Allen at Ponca, in sub-district

Outlook: The Wildcats are 12-8 and figuring themselves out as the postseason encroaches.

Last week’s results: Beat Wausa 71-41, Beat Wynot 41-24

Head coach Nick Haselhorst Comments: “The kids were in sync together offensively against Wausa and that led to a high scoring output in the first quarter. It was a well-played game offensively and defensively. Wynot, we were tenacious defensively, we were disruptive in passing lanes which led to a bunch of steals. The kids played extremely hard on the defensive side of the ball.

“Randolph will be a tough contest, we match up well together, it should be a fun one. Defensively we are playing well, we need to improve our free throw shooting and ability to close tight games out in the fourth quarter.”

RANDOLPH

Upcoming Games: Friday vs. Hartington-Newcastle; Tuesday in Sub-Districts vs. Emerson/Winside winner.

Outlook: Carter Schnoor and Keaton Backhaus rolled out the big guns in the win over Emerson as the Cardinals are playing well at 13-7 as the postseason creeps forward.

Last week’s results: Beat Emerson-Hubbard 74-29, Beat Crofton 55-29

Coach Mark Anderson Comments: “We played fast and quick early and shot very well as we put the Pirates away early. We had a great third quarter as we converted turnovers into points and pulled away from the Warriors.

“Hartington-Newcastle is a solid opponent and it will be a tough game.”

WYNOT

Upcoming Games: Friday at LCC; Tuesday at Sub-Districts, TBD

Outlook: Anthony Haberman came up big in the Blue Devils’ lone win of the week while the squad kept turnovers down while getting the shots they wanted.

Last week’s results: Beat Irene/Wakonda 42-40, Lost to Hartington/Newcastle 41-24

Coach Lee Heimes Comments: “Laurel is a very good team. They are very athletic and shoot the ball very well. They like to get up and down the floor in transition. We are going to need to make sure we get back defensively and not let them get easy shots.

aThey are very athletic and like to push the ball up the floor and shoot the three. We have been playing hard and playing good defense. We need to lower our turnovers on the offensive side.”
