Area athletes compete in All Star Football game
NORFOLK — Several area athletes competed in last weekend’s Northeast Nebraska All Star Football Classic.
Cedar Catholic’s Kerby Hochstein and Myles Thoene competed for the Red Team, while Kobe Heitman represented Hartington-Newcastle in the contest. Heitman is currently in Hastings practicing for the Eight-man All Star game.
Wynot was represented by Anthony Haberman and Peyton Wieseler.
The contest was truly a classic in every sense of the word as the White team pulled off a last-second 17-10 win when Mason Walsh of O’Neill threw a touchdown pass to Haustyn Forney of Humphrey St. Francis with seven seconds left in the contest to break a 10-10 tie.
As the Red squad lined up to punt at their own 32-yard line with 20 seconds left, it looked as though the game was headed for overtime.
That all changed when Stanton’s Mason Bruggeman broke through the offensive line and blocked the punt, giving the White squad the ball deep in Red territory.
Pohlman finished his day with 10 receptions — tying a game record — for 101 yards and a touchdown and was named the offensive player of the game for White.
Mike Brands of Oakland-Craig was named its defensive player of the game. Nick Arenas of Wakefield was named the offensive player of the game for the Red team, and Garrett Boelter of Lutheran High NE earned defensive honors.
On defense, Pohlman set a new all-star classic record with two interceptions, both of which came in the final 90 seconds. His last one was made on the final play of the game.
