1950: Coleridge teacher resigns to enlist in the Air Corps

LAUREL — Manager Iler’s well oiled baseball machine easily swamped Randolph here Sunday, 12-0, in their first game of the semi-finals to keep the Ilermen in the top bracket toward a shot at the Big Six crown.

LAUREL — Carroll, son of Mr. and Mrs. Antone Lipp, received a broken leg in an accident at the Lipp home Monday. A team of horses ran away, something almost unheard of in this day and age, the young man received a broken leg in the mix-up.

LAUREL- B.L.Freiss of Norfolk is the new owner-manager of the Gamble Store here. Friess has been in this line of business for the past 16 years.

They have a 12-year-old daughter and moved here Sunday and have temporary living quarters in the back of the store.

LAUREL- John Haskell, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Haskell broke his collar bone Sunday afternoon.

Aug. 17, 1950

COLERIDGE — The first hot spell of the season is in progress the first of the week to provide excellent growing weather for the late corn crop. About .75 inches of rain fell here Friday night as this area continues to receive plenty of rainfall. The Nebraska Crop Report states that about 83 percent of the corn has tasseled.

Aug. 17, 1950 COLERIDGE — Gene Dugan, prominent Coleridge farmer, died suddenly Wednesday morning, Aug. 16, while working with a threshing crew at his farm. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

COLERIDGE — Elmer Johnson, Coleridge High School music instructor, resigned his position this week and enlisted in the armed forces. Mr. Johnson, who was expecting a draft call, soon went to Omaha Monday, where he enlisted in the ground forces of the air corps. He was sent immediately to Texas for his basic training. The Board of Education announced they had hired Wallace Jensen, North Platte, to fill the vacancy left by Mr. Johnson. Mr.

Jensen, a graduate of Midland College, comes here highly recommended.

He is very well qualified in instrumental music and has had experience with several professional musical organizations.

Aug. 17, 1950 COLERIDGE — Miss Fern Bohlken became the bride of Dale Knudsen at the Lutheran Church, Monday, Aug. 14. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Ben Bohlken.

Aug. 17, 1950 COLERIDGE — Miss Norma Jensen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Chester Jensen became the bride of Francis Sterling Tuesday, Aug.

15, at 8:00 p.m. at the Pilgrim Congregational Church.

Aug. 17, 1950 COLERIDGE — Miss Anna Marie Ruger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Ruger, became the bride of Duane G. Vock Monday, Aug. 14 in a 7:30 a.m. ceremony at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Aug. 18, 1960 LAUREL- Three quarters of an inch of rain came as a corn crop-saver to many area farmers but hail accompanying the storm in other areas completely wiped out the corn or caused extensive damage.

The cold front passed through the area late last Friday evening and Saturday. This was the first rain since July 26.

LAUREL- Nine members of the Laurel Immanuel Lutheran Walther League attended the 40th annual district convention.

Those attending were Diane Huetig, Judy Mohr, Nancy Pehrson, Bob Kastrup, Gary Pehrson, Janice and Tom Rastede and Lila and Linda Haisch.

Aug. 18, 1960

LAUREL — The Cedar County 4-H Livestock Judging Contest was held August 11. The 22 contestants visited five farms. The winner of the dairy judging was Joe McCoy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe McCoy of Laurel. The winner of the meat animal judging was Gary Lentz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lentz of Colerdige.
