New teachers greet students on first day of school

HARTINGTON — The new school year has brought several new teachers to area schools.

Whether it’s in the classroom or on the court, Alexis Arens is ready to jump into her new role at Wynot.

This fall, the Crofton native joins the Wynot Public School staff teaching 5th-7th grade math, and 5th grade reading and writing. She will also be coaching junior high girls’ basketball and high school volleyball and basketball.

“I found a love for sports (in high school),” said Arens. “I participated in volleyball, basketball and track when I was in high school, and now I am looking forward to coaching.”

Growing up on a family farm, Arens said she also enjoys helping in the fields, working cattle, gardening, baking, cooking, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

“All of my family is around Nebraska, and it’s home,” said Arens. “I am a big family person, and being close is important to me.” She went to college at Mount Marty University in Yankton, S.D., and after graduation, accepted a teaching position as a special education teacher. During college, she said she worked as a waitress and at a nursing home. Now joining the Wynot community, Arens is excited for the upcoming school year.

“I love the small/tight community that Wynot has, and I am thankful for the community and school support,” said Arens.
