Area residents can see new event center Friday

HARTINGTON — The historic Skylon Ballroom will reopen its doors Friday, Aug. 22, with a night of live music, food and celebration.

The event begins at 5 p.m. with performances by Vern Kathol alongside Langston and James Christensen. Music will continue from 8 to 11:30 p.m. with College Radio, featuring Kevin Kathol and Casey Rossiter.

Attendees will also have the chance to enjoy one of the Skylon’s longtime staples — Skylon taverns, which will be available for purchase during the evening. Admission is by freewill donation, with proceeds supporting ongoing preservation efforts for the historic venue.

This is actually the second event for the facility since it was moved from its original location and renovated.

The Skylon Ballroom has hosted generations of concerts, dances and community gatherings since Ferdie Peitz first opened it here in 1952.

Friday's event is just the first of many special events planned for the facility as organizers hope to once again make it the spot in Northeast Nebraska for special events.

Preservation fund established to help complete Skylon project

HARTINGTON — The Skylon Preservation Fund has been established to help complete the renovation of this historic Hartington facility.

The venue has served Hartington since 1952 as both an event space and an economic driver, bringing weddings, concerts, reunions and other special events over the years.

Organizers have set a fundraising goal of $300,000 to help complete the renovation project. Hartington Mayor Mark Becker said dozens of local residents and former residents have already donated to the cause.

'It's amazing, people from all over the country have reached out,' Becker said.

Contributions are taxdeductible. Cash and in-kind gifts are accepted, and donors may designate gifts in memory or in honor of someone.

For more information about donating, see the donor form inside this week's Cedar County News.
