2005: Gov. Charlie Thone is featured on NET special

Aug. 17, 2005

HARTINGTON— Skyrocketing gas prices have prompted the Cedar County Commission to make a change with the county Handi-bus.

The bus is designed to help handicapped and elderly county residents get to important out-of-town doctor’s appointments and for excursions to area communities.

The new Handi-bus is not very economical with today’s high gas prices, and often times only has a few riders on it, said Commission Chairman Marlen Kraemer. Commissioners purchased a 2004 Chevy Malibu Classic to be used in place of the Handi-bus whenever possible.

LINCOLN — Former Nebraska Gov. and Hartington native Charles Thone shares insights and surprising stories about his half-century in politics and government during an hour-long NET Television special.

The special “Charles Thone: A Conversation,” airs Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m., repeating Thursday, Aug. 25, at 9 p.m.

Thone recounts the highlights of his life — from his boyhood in Bow Valley and Hartington during the Depression through his career in public service as a Nebraska U.S. Congressman and governor.
