HARTINGTON — With a family tree full of teachers and a passion for words, Hope Steffen is stepping into her first classroom at Wynot High School.
Originally from Crofton, Steffen grew up with a long line of family educators.
“I come from a long line of educators; my grandma and several of my aunts and uncles have been teachers, and my mom has spent over 30 years teaching second grade,” said Steffen. “Growing up surrounded by passionate educators, I knew from a young age that I wanted to follow in their footsteps.”
This fall, Steffen will teach 9–12 English and will be an assistant coach for the Wynot Speech Team.
“I’m really excited about this opportunity. I was a member of my high school speech team and truly enjoyed the experience,” said Steffen. “I’ve always loved Speech because it builds skills like confidence and communication that benefit students far beyond the classroom.”
She also said she has a deep appreciation for English and looks forward to teaching the topic.
“What I love most about the subject is the creativity it allows. There are so many ways to express ideas,” said Steffen. “I also appreciate the deeper thinking that English encourages, whether it’s analyzing literature, exploring different perspectives or reflecting through writing.” She attended Wayne State College and received a degree in secondary English education with endorsements in reading and writing. Steffen said her love for English stemmed from mentors throughout her life. “That desire was only strengthened in high school, where I was lucky to have several inspiring mentors, especially my English teachers, who always made me feel seen and heard. I want to provide that same feeling to my future students,” said Steffen.
Out of school, Steffen said she worked in a food truck every summer throughout high school and now enjoys baking, going on long walks, grabbing ice cream with friends, playing the ukulele and spending time with her three nieces and three nephews.
Steffen said staying in Nebraska is important to her, and she is excited to enter the Wynot community.
“I grew up here; this place is home. It’s where all my family is, and I honestly don’t think I could ever leave it,” said Steffen. “I want the community to know how truly excited and passionate I am about teaching at Wynot. I’m eager to get into the classroom, build positive relationships with my students, and become an active part of the community.”
