All three northern Cedar County grid teams make preseason rankings

LINCOLN — Three Cedar County football teams have made the preseason Top 10 in their respective divisions.

Cedar Catholic is rated second in Class C2 by the Lincoln Journal Star, Omaha World Herald and Huskerland Prep Report. Three-time defending state champion Norfolk Catholic comes in as the top team in all the statewide polls.

Cedar finished last season with an 8-3 record and rated fourth in the state by Huskerland.

Hartington-Newcastle, which ended the 2023 season on a high note, also makes an appearance in two of the polls. Huskerland Prep Report and the Omaha World Herald both list the Wildcats in 10th place in their Class D1 Top 10.

Huskerland ranks the Wildcats largely on their size and experience in the line with four good-sized returning starters on the line. Huskerland also calls 6-4 senior lineman Ashton Wakely, “an All State calibre leader of the line.”

Wynot makes the D2 Top 10 in both the World Herald and the Huskerland Prep Report poll. The Blue Devils are rated fourth by the World Herald and seventh in the Huskerland Prep poll.

The state’s high school football experts believe northeast Nebraska should have quite a few talented football teams this year.

Four of the Top 10 C2 teams are located in northeast Nebraska. Three of those teams are all in District C2- The D1 Top 10 also has four northeast Nebraska squads, while five northeast Nebraska D2 teams make the Top 10.
