WYNOT - Every year since 2008, the Wynot Blue Devils have participated in the Class D2 football playoffs including the 14-year run with current coach, Steve Heimes.
Heimes, although not mentioning the fact, is in line to reach 100 wins in his career, arriving to the first game this season with a 96-44 record, all of them with the Blue Devils.
Eight returning starters and 10 returning lettermen will hit the gridiron this season to try to get the coach to 100 wins and also secure the consecutive playoff appearance streak.
Seven seniors and three juniors make up the 10-returning letter winners.
Seniors, Devin Brummer, Kotner Koch, Emersyn Guenther, Kason Hanson, Killian Steinhaus and Parker Schmidt return with starting experience.
Juniors Lane Heimes and Nixen Heimes also have started for the Blue Devils.
Koch and Lane Heimes started on both sides of the ball last season. “We have great depth and athletic talent but lack size,” said Coach Heimes. “We need to work hard in the weightroom to improve our strength.”
Gone is two-year starter Andrew Haberman at middle linebacker, but Wynot returns enough firepower on both sides of the ball to make a run at another playoff experience.
Wynot will open the season with a game at home at Terry Foxhoven Field against Crofton on Aug. 29 before heading to Creighton to take on the Bulldogs on Sept. 5.
A trip to Archangels Catholic follows on Sept. 12 in Humphrey then a Homecoming date with Randolph on Sept. 19.
September 26 will find the Blue Devils in Lyons taking on Lyons-Decatur Northeast as they open October with Walthill in Wynot on Oct. 3.
Parent’s Night is set for Oct. 10 in a game with Winside then Wynot closes out the regular season with a trip to Bancroft to take on the Bancroft-Rosalie Panthers.
