HARTINGTON — The Hartington- Newcastle cross country teams are busy getting in shape for the rigors of another fall on the course.
Wildcat coach Tanner Fischer and Lady Wildcat coach Lisa Rolfes each welcomed four athletes to compete for this year’s edition of HNS cross country.
“Both the girls’ and boys’ teams are small this year,” the coaches said recently. “Each has some young talent with some returning experience. Each has two returning letterwinners, one incoming freshman and one athlete new to cross country. Both the girls’ and boys’ junior high teams outnumber the high school teams by several athletes. There is a lot of potential in the junior high group.”
The Wildcat varsity will include returning senior, Isaac Santiago and junior, Aiden Anderson, both returning letterwinners and new hopefuls, sophomore Donnie Schulte and freshman Jeffrey Heine.
The Lady Wildcat varsity will include returning senior, Isabel Rolfes and sophomore, Jaden Opfer, both returning letterwinners and new hopefuls, freshmen, Breah Steffen and Ashlynn Dailey.
HNS will open the season at home with the Hartington-Newcastle Invitational on Aug. 28 followed by the Wisner-Pilger Invitational at Indian Trails Country Club in Beemer on Sept. 4.
The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Invitational is set for Sept. 11, the Scotus Catholic Invite is on Sept. 18, the Crofton Invitational is on Sept. 25 and the month will end with HNS at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Invitational Sept. 29.
The Creighton Invite on Oct. 2 precedes the Greater Northeast Activities Conference Meet on Oct. 9 at Summerland Golf Course and the district meet site will be determined at a later date.
The 2025 Nebraska Cross Country Championships will run Oct. 24 at the Kearney Country Club in Kearney.
