Aug. 13, 1980

HARTINGTON — Rain soaked the fairgrounds in Hartington on Saturday and Sunday, but spirits were not dampened as the Cedar County Fair opened its 100th year.

Gate receipts are up from last year, according to gate chairman Ritch Miller.

Sunday’s parade could not have been timed better, as a brief heavy thunderstorm held off until participants had traveled the parade route.

A large crowd lined the streets of downtown Hartington and several hundred people saw the parade as it passed the fairground grandstand at the end of the route.

HARTINGTON — A narrow band of hail accompanied by strong winds cut through rural Hartington Sunday afternoon stripping corn and soybeans and playing havoc with vegetable gardens.

One of the farms that was hit was Bob Steffen’s corn on land southeast of town. Tommy Steffen believes his beans may come back on the home place. Along Highway 15, soybeans are almost without leaves and the cornstalks are grim reminders of the brief storm on Sunday.
