BRANDON, S.D. — The Wynot Expos outhit the Milbank Firechiefs eight to seven in the opening round of the South Dakota Class C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Aug. 8.
But the only stat that mattered in this “win or go home” affair was the score, which the Firechiefs outscored the Expos 5-3 to sideline Wynot for the summer and move on in the tournament.
Wynot never led in the game as Milbank scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.
The Firechiefs scored on a couple of walks and a single in the first and an error and two walks in the second, the Expos committed three errors in the nine-inning contest.
Wynot answered in the fourth on backto- back walks to Jackson Sudbeck and Jalen Wieseler then a Lee Heimes line drive into left field to make it 2-1 heading into the fifth frame.
Devon Lammers opened a promising fifth for Wynot with a double but a couple of strikeouts and a fly ball left him stranded at second base.
The Firechiefs would score three runs in the fifth with the big blow coming from an Isaac Schulte double after a single and backto- back errors by the Expos.
Jalen Wieseler doubled with one out in the Wynot eighth then advanced to third on a passed ball.
Heimes hit a hard ground ball to third and was thrown out but Wieseler scored to make it 5-2 heading into the final frame.
Scotty Morrison came on to pitch for the Expos in the ninth and sat the Firechiefs down in order then a Peyton Wieseler single with one out got things going for Wynot in the bottom half.
Michael Drotzman, a pickup player for Wynot doubled with two outs to chase Wieseler home but a ground ball ended the threat and the game.
The Expos ended the summer with an 11-11 record.
