1960: Randolph to hold annual one-day fair

Aug. 4, 1960

RANDOLPH — This is part of a series of articles to appear in the Times which feature Randolph’s business and professional people.

The series, sponsored by the Randolph Community club, is designed to better acquaint the public with local business and professional people and the services which they provide.

Owner of the Berge Funeral Home here is Bert Berge, who has been associated with funeral homes in Randolph since 1946.

Mr. Berge came here at that time to be employed by the Secord Mortuary. He later was employed by Bill Steckelberg when he purchased the Secord Mortuary.

Mr. Berge purchased the funeral home from Mr. Steckelberg in 1958. He also has operated a branch funeral home at Carroll since the early part of this year.

Prior to coming to Randolph Mr. Berge had been employed with the Brailey and Dorrance funeral home in Omaha and the Volland funeral home at Hastings.

A native of Dell Rapids, S. D., he is licensed to practice in South Dakota and Nebraska.

He has been a licensed mortician since 1926.

Two of Mr. Berge’s brothers, Nels of National City, Calif., and Melvin of Norfolk, are also morticians.

In addition to the funeral home Mr. Berge operates the Berge TV where he sells RCA, Zenith and Motorola television equipment and RCA air conditioning units.

Larry Lewis is Mr. Berge’s assistant in his business.

Mr. Berge is married to the former Hazel Fox of Geneva. The couple were married in 1943.

Aug. 4, 1960

RANDOLPH — All roads lead to Randolph Monday, August 8, and the Randolph Community club extends a cordial welcome to everyone in the area to be here that day for the Randolph Community Fair.

The fair, the only one-day event of its kind in the area, is the biggest community event of the year.

The fair features many 4-H livestock and homemakers exhibits and is widely known in this section of the state for its excellence of exhibits and lively interest shown.

Youths eligible to exhibit at the fair are all FFA boys and 4-H boys and girls over eight years of age, living in an area adjacent to Randolph. This area includes Allen and Eastern precincts; Pierce county lying east of Highway 98; Sherman and Deer precincts of Wayne county; and precincts 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 of Cedar county.

R. M. Kildee, of Fremont, a veteran in judging circles, will be livestock judge for the 1960 fair.

He has become prominently known as a judge because of his explanatory remarks and intense interest in farm youths.

Co-chairmen of the fair, Marvin Closter and Vernon Viergutz, report there will be plenty of entertainment to make the fair of interest to everyone.

The Funland Shows carnival group will be on the grounds throughout the day and evening.
