HARTINGTON — Cedar County will continue to reach out to local libraries with funds.
County Commissioners agreed July 28 to help support three local libraries.
The Hartington Public Library and the Randolph Public Library will each receive $6,000. Funds in the amount of $3,000 will go to the Community Learning Center at Laurel, which is used by the public and the school system.
Emily Patefield, member of Laurel Library Board, shared information about the Laurel Community Learning Center/Library which is located at the school in Laurel.
“With the funding from the county we have purchased new books for the library,” Patefield said. “We have even doubled our circulation since a year ago in June.”
New programs for kids and adults have become available at the Learning Center.
A young Authors Night for kids was held and a children’s program was started in the afternoon.
“One of our goals is to reach out to middle school and high school kids. We are trying to find out what would be of interest to this age group,” Patefield said. “We will be starting a Book on Wheels program in the near future. We will go to the nursing home or stop at residents homes in town who aren’t able to get to the Library.”
Members of the Library Board would like to update the technology and purchase new laptops and iPads for the Library.
“Friends of the Library” is becoming more active in the community.
“We reach out to families that have just had a new baby and to families that have moved into town,” she said.
The Library Board is made up of seven members. All of the members are new to the board according to Patefield.
The Lied Randolph Public Library is accredited at the highest level, which is Gold, according to Randolph Library Director Peggy Leiting.
