1970: Pearl Creek members dominate at Randolph Fair

LAUREL- Rev. J. Keith Cook was officially installed by the Presbytery of Niobrara as the pastor of the United Presbyterian Church here.

LAUREL- Mr. and Mrs. John Hochstein and family are leaving soon for their home in Crawford where John has been transferred by Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Company. He has been a service man in Laurel for the past eight years.

COLERIDGE — The local school census was completed recently by Grace Andrus and statistics show there are 486 individuals under 21 in the present school district.

Of this total number, there are 360 of school age. Figures show that there are a total of 68 boys and 58 girls under five years of age. In the five and six year bracket there are 26 boys and 32 girls. From 7-15 the breakdown is 106 boys and 109 girls. Age group 16-20 has 183 boys and 177 girls. Comparison of these figures with other years is impossible because of the newly formed district which covers 91 square miles.

COLERIDGE — A summons to the Harold Thompson Sr. home Saturday evening about 7 p.m. was answered by the Coleridge Volunteer Fire Department to extinguish a fire in a combine, which had broken out around the motor. The blaze was rapidly brought under control but extensive damage was done to the motor.

COLERIDGE — A collision of a hay truck and a Chicago Northwestern train near Laurel Tuesday evening has claimed the life of Mr. Robert A. Wallinger from Stuart.

The accident occurred about 11 p.m. at the crossing of Highway 20. Mr. Wallinger’s wife is in the hospital. They are the parents of four small girls. This is the second accident for the train in less than a month as it collided with a tractor driven by Steve Nordby north of Coleridge on July 7.

LAUREL- Dick Hanson, employee of the Laurel Municipal Light Plant was severely injured from a fall from a light pole last Thursday, Hanson was working with some wires on the pole and had loosened his safety belt in preparation to shift his position. In doing so he came into contact with a hot wire which rendered his unconscious and allowed him to fall from the pole.

LAUREL- Carl Urwiler left Sunday from Sioux City for Geneva, Switzerland. He left by jet at 11:55 a.m. from Idlewilde Airport in New York City Sunday and expected to arrive in Geneva Monday noon.

He will visit his sisters and families and also the families of the late Mrs. Urwiler. This is his first trip to Switzerland in 37 years.

LAUREL- Mr. and Mrs. Myron Dirks are the parents of a son, Myron Phil. born August 5.

Aug. 6, 1970

RANDOLPH — The grand champion steer and heifer of the livestock entries at the Randolph Community Fair were won by a steer shown by Dennis Milander and a heifer shown by Jeanne Milander of the Pearl Creek area.

Both winners are members of the Pearl Creek Livestock Club. Eddie Kalin, also of the Pearl Creek Livestock Club had the reserve champion steer. Greg Wolfe and Fred Kalin won showmanship honors in the beef division.

In the swine division, Greg Wolfe was an award winner. Rebecca Hansen won a showmanship award and also had a champion animal in the dairy exhibition. They are all also of the Pearl Creek Club.

LAUREL- The Laurel Firemen will be serving 150 watermelon at the Chamber of Commerce booth during Sidewalk Days Saturday.

LAUREL- Morris C. and Clara Kvols of Laurel were among seven Cedar County farm families to receive the Nebraska Pioneer Award during the Cedar County Fair.

LAUREL- Patty Janssen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Janssen, received the third place showmanship trophy at the District Dairy Show in South Sioux City.

LAUREL- Mark Calcavecchia participated in a Junior Golf Tournament in LeMars, Iowa, July 28. In his class, boys 12 and under, he placed second in the second flight.

LAUREL-Keith and Sandra Clarkson purchased the Laurel Advocate from Duane and Alice Kunzman July 31.

LAUREL- Nick Klintberg of Laurel was one of the candidates for king of the Summer Music Camp at Wayne State College.
