HARTINGTON — Thirteen-year-old Brianna Jensen made a big impression at the Cedar County Fair this year, entering more events in the 12-and-up division than any other participant.
With 36 entries, her list spanned a variety of categories, ranging from live animal shows to fashion shows.
The daughter of Cristina and Brian Jensen of Randolph said one of her favorite projects this year included entering flowers and arrangements.
“I love putting the flowers together, and I think it is really fun to find different kinds of flowers and what kind of flowers should go together,” said Brianna.
Some of Brianna’s other projects included sewing, rabbit showing, Legos, produce and photography.
Brianna said she and her mom were surprised when they learned she had entered the most projects in the 12 and up division.
“This year I wasn’t really expecting it, because we didn’t work as hard as we did last year, but I definitely was surprised that I got it this year,” said Brianna.
Her mother agreed, saying, “Her face was priceless,” and that last year they entered nearly 66 projects, making this year’s 36 dwindle in comparison.
Brianna said 4-H has helped her learn independence and has given her confidence.
“It has taught me that I could do a lot of things on my own that I wouldn’t have thought I could do,” said Brianna.
Brianna and her mother said they typically start preparing for the fair five or six weeks before the fair but tending to animals and their garden is year-round.
“It’s a lot a lot of work, you have to put a lot of effort in, but it is so worth it,” said Brianna.
Cristina Jensen said he recommends other families join the organization and suggests using the Cedar County Extension office.
“We’re pretty fortunate that our extension office offers a ton of classes and guidance, so my words of wisdom would be to utilize our extension office because they are great resources,” said Junson.
For Brianna and her mom, the fair isn’t just about ribbons or entry counts; it’s about building new skills and sharing that experience with their community.
