Cedar County youth, adults compete in livestock judging contest

HARTINGTON — Thirty-three youth and 15 adults participated in the Cedar County 4-H Livestock Judging Contest July 20.

The participants ranked four head of livestock in each class of market swine, breeding beef, and breeding lambs.

The main goal of this fun activity is to learn a good decision-making process by evaluating the characteristics of the animals, comparing them to the others in the class, and measuring them against a standard to select high-quality livestock.

Hayden Klug, Calvin Lammers, Charlotte Sudbeck, and Ethan Brodersen participated in the contest as Clover Kids.

In the Junior Division, Levi Steen received a purple ribbon and the Junior Division Champion medal.

Declan Sudbeck received a purple ribbon and the Reserve Champion rosette. Anna Heine, Kate Brodersen, Grady Stewart, Simon Lammers, Bennett Nordby, Oliver Lammers, and Oakley Foxhoven were blue ribbon winners.

In the Intermediate Division, Eli Stewart received a purple ribbon and the Intermediate Division Champion medal. Stella Graham received a purple ribbon and the Reserve Champion rosette.

Nolan Nordby, Harrison Winkelbauer, Jacy Nelson, and Hunter Klug also received a purple ribbon. Blue ribbon winners were Emmett Klug, Mary Heine, Hadley Nordby, Chesney Foxhoven, Clara Winkelbauer, Kynlee Steen, Charla Pick, and Kellen Sudbeck.

In the Senior Division Ashlynn Dailey received a purple ribbon and the Senior Division Champion medal. Breah Steen received a purple ribbon and the Reserve Champion rosette.

Gus Lammers also received a purple ribbon.

Blue ribbon winners were Jayden Lammers, Blake Klug and Jerey Heine. The adults were also invited to participate in the contest.

Participating were John Brodersen, Dave Andersen, June Heydon, Kelvin Puntney, Cynthia Puntney, Jon Heine, Katelyn Lammers, Terry Dendinger, Tucker Lammers, Katie Winkelbauer, Melissa Graham, Erica Foxhoven, Troy Lammers, John Nelson and Jess Nelson.

Due to a tie, this year the champion title is shared between Katie Winkelbauer and Jess Nelson.

Organizers said all of the 4-H events and contests can only be made possible through the help of a great many people volunteering their time.

The livestock judged were provided by 4-H members exhibiting at the fair.

This year’s Champion Medals for the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Divisions in the Livestock Judging were sponsored by Farm Credit Services of America/Yankton, Cedar Security Bank, and First Northeast Bank of Nebraska. Reserve champion rosettes were sponsored by Cedar County Ag Society.
