WYNOT - The Wynot Expos advanced to the District VI South Dakota Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament championship game with a 6-3 win over the Irene Cardinals on July 31 at Terry Foxhoven Field.
Wynot grabbed a spot in the district finals with the 6-3 win, assured a spot in the South Dakota Class B Amateur Tournament and seems to be playing some of its best baseball at just the right time.
“We played well tonight for sure,” said long-time Wynot skipper and player, Lee Heimes. “We played good defense, got some great pitching and survived to move on.”
Wynot hosted the district tournament for just the second time ever, and made the most of the home cooking as the Expos will move on in the finals to take on Tabor (SD) on Aug. 2 as the last two unbeaten teams in the field.
Jalen Wieseler took the mound for Wynot to start the game with the Cardinals and held them scoreless for four innings before giving way to Jackson Sudbeck in the fifth.
Irene scored three runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, but Sudbeck and the Expos weren’t finished.
Sudbeck held the Cardinal offense in check the rest of the way and Wynot took the lead for good in the seventh.
Sudbeck helped his own cause and opened the Wynot half of the seventh with a single past the second baseman, then advanced to second base on an error by the Cardinal first baseman.
Landon Wieseler laced a single back up the middle which advanced Sudbeck to third.
Heimes came to the plate and put a ball in play to second scoring Sudbeck and moving Wieseler to second.
Jalen Wieseler grounded out to move his brother to third then Peyton Wieseler was walked intentionally.
Devon Lammers stepped to the plate and smacked a line drive back up the middle to plate Landon Wieseler and earn the lead back for the Expos.
Zack Foxhoven singled and scored in the eighth along with Sudbeck, who scored on a wild pitch after getting aboard on an error and the final score and the district finals were set.
