1935: Shotgun shell claims Randolph youth’s eye

July 25, 1935

RANDOLPH - Vernon Rudebusch, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rudebusch Sr., well known farmers southwest of Randolph, had his right eye removed at a Norfolk hospital last Friday.

Vernon met with this accident on July 5 when he fastened a 22 calibre shell in a vise and exploded the shell with a hammer. So tightly was the shell held by the vise that it back fired and struck the lad in the eye.

Vernon left the hospital on Monday and after a few days with friends in Norfolk is expected to return to his home about the last of the week.

He is getting along nicely and came through the operation in good shape.
