RANDOLPH - The heat wave that descended on the Randolph community Monday after several days of cool weather sent the mercury soaring to 102 degrees on Tuesday. The extreme heat continued on into Wednesday, with not much promise of relief.

Accompanying the terrific heat on Tuesday was a rather strong wind, dangerous to the crops because of its moisture sapping.

The weekly weather and crop report stated warm, dry weather last week caused further deterioration to all crops, but the corn in the northeastern part of the state is holding up quite well.

Approximately 18 percent of the corn had tasseled at the close of the week, but the corn is much later than usual this year.

Harvesting was nearing completion, and while some yields have been quite high, there have been disappointing returns in many areas with a greater than usual acreage cut for hay.

A heavy, general rain would be ideal to keep the good growing conditions made possible in this area by rains a week or two ago.
