1925: New school house being built for Eagle Valley

July 30, 1925

RANDOLPH - The Isadore Kuhl threshing outfit and crew, assisted by neighbors of Mrs. Nic Dominisse, drove to the Dominisse farm Wednesday afternoon and threshed 50 acres of oats for her. The men tendered their services and made short work of the job for there was plenty of help.

Mrs. Dominisse feels very grateful indeed for this friendliness and the spirit of helpfulness that went with it.

She wishes to thank each one for their part in the work and assures them that their thoughtfulness has indeed been a help to her.

RANDOLPH - A fine new school house is being built at Eagle Valley, Dist. 55, north of Randolph 5 miles.

The new building will be 24x36, or a little larger than the old one. Work on the full basement was begun last Thursday and the building will be pushed along to completion for use at the opening of the school year.

The directors, after careful estimate, concluded that the old building needed such extensive repairs that it would be better to build. The new school house will stand on the southwest corner of the grounds, thus giving more playground room.

When the new building is completed the old one will be advertised and sold.

RANDOLPH-Fred Backer who works for Nick Dominisse east of town, was towed to safety last Friday evening when he got beyond his depth in the Randolph pool. As near as we can learn Mr. Backer stepped or slipped off the ledge into deep water and not being a good swimmer he went down. Coming to the surface he shouted for help, his cries being heard and his predicament noted by Arleigh Hawe and Arthur Carmony who were standing on the diving board.

Both young men jumped into the water, Hawe reaching the struggling man first. Hawe seized him by the hair but lost his grip when Backer struggled and fought to save himself.

Carmony swam near and Backer got hold of Carmony’s foot and kept good hold of it while he was towed to shallow water by the two men and lifted out of the pool.

Mr. Backer must have had the presence of mind to keep his mouth pretty well closed for he swallowed but little water and in about five minutes got up and walked away. The incident is of value as a warning to be careful.

The construction of the Randolph pool is such that the sides are shelving and provide a place where one may wade if near the edge, the 9 foot depth being in the center of the north end.

RANDOLPH - Rural mail carriers over Nebraska will hold their annual convention in Hartington in 1931.

This is the word brought by Carrier Schager of Randolph, who returned from the state convention at Hastings on Tuesday evening.

Cedar county was represented at Hastings by Mr. and Mrs. C. M.

Schager of Randolph, Mr. and Mrs.

Hans Schager and Lloyd Hardy of Hartington, Mr. and Mrs. Geo.

Bowder of Wynot, and Lloyd Henry of Coleridge. Bill Foreman of McLean also attended.

Mr. Henry of Coleridge presented Hartington’s claims for the 1931 convention. Columbus and Wahoo withdrew their claims, the vote being Hartington 92 and Minden 57.

Hartington was in the race last year and lost to Hastings by four votes.

Four hundred attended the banquet, an affair that was wonderfully served and thoroughly enjoyed. Free picture shows and dance were part of the entertainment furnished.

C. E. Totten of Cozad was elected president for the coming year, and J. C. Schuknecht of Seward and J. D. McCall of Ord were re-elected secretary and treasurer.

RANDOLPH - Byron Jones, eight miles southeast of Randolph, was hurt last Saturday morning while at work on the farm. Mr. Jones was using a wrench on his binder, when the wrench slipped and his hand struck, with considerable force, the edge of the binder frame, cutting the left wrist so badly that two stitches were required to close the wound.
