L etters Dear Editor: I realize that I’m just looking in from the outside, but Kudos to Don DeBlauw for his letter on the “chicken issue” in Hartington.
If the ordinance is primarily due to the roosters and their wake-up call, why wasn’t a compromise considered?
Full disclosure here, I have a backyard coop with four hens, and I also have two dogs. Guess which animals make the most noise?
I live in a city which is regularly on those lists for business and quality of life. We allow backyard chickens, but with restrictions. No roosters; your flock cannot exceed eight hens; the coop must be in the backyard and you can only free range on your property IF it is fenced. This seems reasonable to me.
Maybe the city should admit they went too far. Meet the people who want chickens halfway.
It’s called good policy when you meet in the middle and maybe you will even be the beneficiary of farm fresh eggs if you do.
