ORCHARD — The Hartington Post 4 Senior American Legion opened the Class C Area 1 Baseball Tournament July 25 with a 2-1 win over the Plainview Post 148 Senior Legion in a defensive game with outstanding pitching from both dugouts.
Koby Detlefsen and Brady Hochstein combined to allow just three hits, one run and 14 strikeouts (10 by Detlefsen), while walking just three Plainview batters each. Plainview pitcher, Ty Diedrichsen allowed just one hit to Hartington batters, walked four and struck out 10, but Post 4 manufactured an additional run to move on in the winner’s bracket.
The game was scoreless until Hartington broke through in the sixth, with its two runs on the night.
Micah Cattau was hit by Diedrichsen with one out to get on board then promptly stole second base.
Grady Haberer hit a grounder to third base which ended up an out, but Cattau raced around third to score the first run of the game.
Brady Hochstein was then hit by the pitcher and Hudson Whitmire was put on base as a courtesy runner.
Whitmire stole second then stole third then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 while Easton Hochstein worked a walk.
Hochstein was caught stealing and the inning ended. Brady Hochstein was on the hill to open the seventh and struck out a Plainview batter after walking the opening Post 148 batter to open the Plainview half of the frame.
A single into center field plated the Plainview runner and Hochstein intentionally walked the next batter.
A strikeout and a pop fly ended the half inning and the game as Hochstein secured the game and the win on the mound.
Post 4 moved on to take on Creighton in the tournament. Hartington Post 4 Senior Legion defeated Plainview Post 148 Senior Legion 2-1.
