WYNOT — The Wynot Expos entered the South Dakota District VI Amateur Baseball Tournament as the host team and the No. 2 seed.
The Expos proved their seeding and enjoyed a little home cooking with a 4-0 shutout of Menno in the first round at Terry Foxhoven Field on July 11.
Wynot had just beaten the Mad Frogs 6-2 on July 17 in the final regular season game of the South Central League in a game played in Menno and Landon Wieseler and Jackson Sudbeck combined to keep the Mad Frog bats stymied with a four-hit performance Friday with 10 strikeouts.
Wieseler pitched the first 6.1 innings and allowed three hits and recorded six strikeouts to get the win and Sudbeck tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowed just one hit while striking out four to pick up the save.
The Expos took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, added two in the sixth and one in the eighth to reach the 4-0 final score.
Landon Wiesler sat Menno down in order to open the game and the Wynot offense used a single by Peyton Wieseler and a double by Devon Lammers to get the Expos going in the second frame.
Wieseler got to third on Lammers’ double and scored on a David Schenk ground ball to second base.
A sacrifice bunt by Nate Wieseler moved Lammers to third, but he was stranded there after a ground out by the next Wynot batter.
Landon Wieseler kept the game scoreless until the Wynot offense got going again in the sixth.
Peyton Wieseler doubled to left field to open the sixth then Lammers reached on a Mad Frog error, one of four committed by Menno in the contest.
Schenk came to the plate and bunted back to the pitcher, who also mishandled the ball which scored Wieseler and left runners at the corners.
Nate Wieseler flew out to right field for the first out of the at bat, then Carson Wieseler hit another fly ball to right, but it was deep enough to score Lammers and the score was 3-0.
The Expos got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a Carson Wieseler single up the middle which chased Colin Wieseler home, who was courtesy running for Schenk, who was the Wynot catcher.
Wynot was set to move on in the tournament with a Tuesday night date with Irene in the district semifinals with the winner moving on to the finals, Aug. 2 against top-seeded Tabor or No. 4-seeded Lesterville. The Wynot/ Irene loser will move along to take on Freeman on July 31.
